Climate Week NYC 2023 marked a significant juncture on the path to achieving the goals outlined in the Paris Agreement. We are now at the midway point and there is still much left to do. Over the last seven years, we’ve seen ambitious commitments and actions taken toward addressing climate change, however, there have also been increasingly severe and unprecedented climate activities and irreversible nature loss that impact the most marginalized communities disproportionately.
With global leaders, activists and leaders in the corporate, financial and public sector spaces convening, Climate Week New York served as an optimal moment to engage stakeholders, share knowledge and ensure that the next stage in this journey is characterized by even more ambitious action, innovation and cooperation to curb climate change.
CDP is pleased to have hosted and participated in a suite of events throughout the week geared toward convening policymakers, corporate and financial leaders and industry experts in timely discussions around how we can accelerate climate action.
The urgency for collective and transformative action places ESG data as an integral component of the global climate solution. The more we can develop data to be consistent, comparable, and science-based, the more we can accurately inform and enhance the allocation of capital needed to accelerate the transition to a 1.5°C, resilient and nature-positive economy, while continually pushing the boundaries to enhance ambition and accountability for private sector actors.
In this session, CDP, FoSDA and S&P Global hosted a dialogue on how ESG data represents the much-needed bedrock for the UN climate agenda, driving ambition of business actions, ensuring credibility of commitments and paving the way towards accountability. The participants discussed progress to date in the ESG data ecosystem and shed light on challenges related to data gaps, holes, and access. Together, participants explored:
• The pivotal role of ESG data
• Progress made and current challenges the ESG data ecosystem faces
• The relationship between data and accountability to drive action.
The 1000 Landscapes for 1 Billion People initiative (1000L), EcoAgriculture Partners, and Climate-KIC were pleased to have convened a dialogue for leading philanthropists financing landscape transformation. The dialogue examined how philanthropy strategically focused on landscapes can unlock unprecedented flows of climate, biodiversity, food systems and development funding to support local communities as they build thriving landscapes. Discussion explored how philanthropies can use their unique positions to catalyze the system changes necessary to unlock or redirect larger financial flows, particularly by aligning funds and working together at landscape to global scales. Participants also shared lessons learned and discussed potential collaboration to enhance collective impact.
CDP was thankful to host a private reception during Climate Week 2023, and appreciates Millbank providing an ideal setting at its Hudson Yard office. Supporters and partners along with CDP North America’s Board and staff welcomed our incoming Global CEO, Sherry Madera, who will begin her role on October 1. Sherry brings with her a wealth of knowledge to CDP as Chair of Future Sustainable Data Alliance (FoSDA) a global organization dedicated to supporting data requirements to drive sustainable finance and from her role as SVP for Public Policy at Mastercard.
Attendees were also able to hear from CDP’s Chief Impact Officer, Nicolette Bartlett, on exciting transformations coming to CDP that will improve the experience for disclosers, allowing us to scale up environmental disclosure, broaden our coverage of environmental topics and increase our impact around the world.
CDP experts joined CO2 AI and BCG for a pre-dinner discussion and drinks around Scope 3: from reporting to actual reduction. Attendees engaged in meaningful discussion about reducing carbon emissions (incl. Scope 3) in a data-driven way. Key topics for discussion included:
• Accurate Scope 3 data collection and how to tackle product-level data across the supply chain
• How to put in place sustainable procurement at scale, in a successful and efficient way.
Discussion also focused on inspiration from the success stories of large organizations pioneering the topic and informal chats about the dos / don'ts.
CDP and BCG hosted an in-person roundtable discussion under Chatham House Rules on the topic of Scope 3 and leading supplier engagement approaches. CDP’s Chief Commercial Officer and prior Global Director of Supply Chains, Dexter Galvin, along with key experts, leaders and CDP Supply Chain Members convened for timely discussions on how we can accelerate action at the scale and pace needed to curb the devastating impacts of climate change and best practices and emerging solutions for Scope 3.
CDP and C40 Cities, in conjunction with the US Department of the Treasury's Chief Implementation Officer for the Inflation Reduction Act, Laurel Blatchford, were pleased to organize a closed-door discussion on cross-sector partnerships catalyzing action and impact under the IRA.
New York Climate Week 2023 offered an opportune moment to bring together key stakeholders, including senior leaders from the public, corporate and financial sectors to discuss strategies to deliver investments for sustainable and equitable impacts through the Inflation Reduction Act.
Local government leaders have a groundbreaking opportunity to accelerate clean-energy and climate mitigation projects with access to never-before-seen funds thanks to elective pay and other IRA initiatives.
